NEW DELHI—In a tragic incident, Sikh spiritual leader Baba Ram Singh today shot himself at the site of farmers’ agitation at Singhu border of Delhi in protest against the injustice by Indian government to the farmers agitating against three ‘draconian’ laws promulgated by the government. He has played a significant role in spreading Sikhi especially in Haryana, neighbouring state of Punjab.
He was participating in the agitation for the last many days. After partaking the langar today, he went to his car in which he shot himself with a gun. Found in a pool of blood, he was immediately taken to a private hospital in Sonipat where he was declared brought dead by the doctors.
Thousands of the Sikh devotees were associated with him as he was a major religious preacher and headquartered at village Singhra in Karnal district. He also left a hand written suicide note behind in GurmukhiSant Ram Singh of Singhra (Nanaksar) Gives Life in Support of Protesting Farmers, which is being examined by the Police.
Notably, he was associated to Nanaksar samprada and made key contribution to spread Sikhi in Haryana. He was very popular among the Sikh community there. It is commonly heard there saying that ‘he is preserving Sikhi in Haryana’.
He preached the teachings of Guru Sahib with the help of kirtan. He performed kirtan to spread the Sikh principles in a melodious voice. His following was not only limited to Haryana, but he was respected figures for the Sikh devotees in other countries.
Sources said he preserved land for a historic gurdwara in Ayodhya and got a multi-storeyed gurdwara building there. This is one of the best buildings of this city visited by Guru Nanak centuries ago. `
Entire Sikh community is mourning the death of such a spiritual saint. However, this act is being termed ‘supreme sacrifice’ for the cause of farmers.
Already 20 farmers participating in the agitation have died of heart attacks and road mishaps.
Reacting to the death of the Sikh saint, Sikh seminary Damdami Taksal (Mehta faction) head Baba Harnam Singh Khalsa said, “Stubborn attitude of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government has taken the life of Baba Ram Singh. How many more lives it will take? His act has shaken every sensitive person.”
It is noteworthy that the farmers are spending nights on the roads at Delhi borders in very tough conditions as the cold wave has gripped north India. Mercury dipped to 4.1 Celsius on December 14. Despite this, the Modi government is adamant not to meet their demands.
1. Three Sikhs died today, including Sardar Gurmeet Singh who passed away.
2. Sad news coming in from Mansa. A farmer Gurdev Singh Of village Khara has committed suicide by throwing himself under a train near the track at Narinderpura. He was debt-ridden for years & was losing land in return for money. He was left with 2 acres out of 20 acres.
3. Baba Ram Singh Nanaksar shot himself at the Singhu border at around 04:30 pm. This is another aspect of Singhu border which is not seen amidst the noise of the stage, and atmosphere of energy. This incident has led to a lot of discussion in the community of the manner of death. Some calling it a sacrifice, others stating mental health issues are increasing in people, as no one wants to protest, but circumstances are forcing them to.
4. A group of farmers from Punjab’s Anandpur Sahib has started an ‘informal school’ in a makeshift tent for local slum children at the Singhu border. This adds to the blood donation, feeding the poor of Delhi, cleaning Delhi, feeding the police and army, and many other social humanitarian sevas that Godi media never mention.
5. Singhu border protest has grown so large that even Ghodi admits it’s now the size of a small city.
6. Divide and rule policy by Agriculture Minister Tomar continues. He says now only one state is protesting, referring to Punjab. This is totally false. To justify his propaganda on TV he shows meetings with farmers from other states. Actual farmers leaders from their states say those on TV from their states are BJP activists just shown as farmers.
7. The Supreme Court on Wednesday said that the farmers’ protests could soon snowball into a national issue and the top court is, therefore, mooting formation of a committee to hold talks and settle the matter amicably, Bar and Bench report.
8. Petitions have been filed in Supreme Court to immediately move the farmers. Some observers see the Supreme Court may be used to justify the removal of protestors by force.

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD-Badal) today told the Punjab Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unit to ask its high command why it had abandoned the core principles of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and violated coalition ‘dharma’ vis a vis the SAD instead of indulging in hate politics which would only vitiate peace and communal harmony in the State.
Expressing shock at the “irresponsible” statements of few Amritsar abased BJP leaders who “parroted” lines as per the script handed over to them, SAD senior leader Prem Singh Chandumajra said “the Punjab BJP seems to have taken up the Congress policy of divide and rule which can only have devastating repercussions in the State. The SAD appeals to Punjabis to realize the dangerous game being played by Punjab BJP leaders who are ready to spoil the peace of the State. They are gearing up to make one brother (Sikh) fight against another (Hindu) solely to get a foothold after being overwhelmingly rejected by the people following the enactment of the three hated agricultural marketing Acts”.
Asking the local leaders to take their fight to the centre, Chandumajra said “you need to ask your party leadership why it has abandoned the moderate policies of Atal Behari Vajpayee and forgotten to take everyone along with you. Instead of spewing venom against the SAD you should ask the centre why it has taken an anti-farmer and anti-peasant line. Why is the new BJP toeing the line of the corporate sector? Why did it frame legislation without even consulting the stakeholders and why it is bent on giving a ‘gift’ which farmers don’t want?”
Asking the Amritsar based leaders of the BJP to start thinking about the welfare of the country instead of “polarizing Hindu and Sikhs into different camps in the same manner in which it polarized Hindus and Muslims against each other”, Chandumajra said “Punjab has passed through more than a decade of turmoil in the past. Don’t lay the foundation for another such spell”.
Speaking about the role of the SAD, Chandumajra said the SAD had formed an alliance with the BJP for people welfare. “We are committed to the welfare of farmers as well as poor and downtrodden sections of society besides each and every community irrespective of caste and creed. This is the reason SAD President Sukhbir Badal demanded that the CAA ambit should be widened to include Muslims in it. This is why the SAD asked the BJP high command to listen to the concerns of farmers before taking up the farm ordinances for legislation. It is the BJP which assured that all grievances would be addressed but instead of doing so it bull dozed the farm Bills through parliament”.
Finally, the SAD leader asked the BJP leaders to tell Punjabis whether the BJP had systematically targeted its opponents as separatists and even invented epithets like “tukde tukde” gang for them? “You have pitted Hindus against Muslims. You have labeled peacefully protesting farmers as Khalistanis. Now you are pitting Hindus against Sikhs in Punjab. The SAD President has only called a spade a spade. You should accept this reality and if you truly want the welfare of Punjabis you should take up cudgels against the central government instead of targeting the SAD President”, Chandumajra added.
CHANDIGARH, Punjab—The apex Sikh body Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee is planning to send a special jatha of Sikhs to mark the first centenary of Saka Nankana at Gurdwara Janam Asthan Sahib Sri Nankana Sahib in Pakistan. Notably, the SGPC is also planning special events to mark this historic occasion on February 21, 2021 in Punjab.

It may be recalled here that more than 260 Sikhs were brutally martyred by the mercenaries of Mahants on February 20, 1921 at Nankana Sahib when they were struggling to get this historic shrine liberated from their possession under Gurdwara Reform Movement.
Interacting with media, SGPC’s honorary chief secretary Harjinder Singh Dhami informed that the SGPC is chalking out special events to mark this historic day. “An eleven-member sub-committee has been constituted under the leadership of Jathedar Tota Singh for designing the proceedings of these events,” he added.
He further informed that the SGPC has a plan to send a jatha of around 5,000 Sikhs to mark this historic event at Gurdwara Janam Asthan Sri Nankana Sahib (Pakistan).
On being questioned whether SGPC president Bibi Jagir Kaur and other eminent office bearers will also be attending these centenary events in Pakistan, Dhami said that the sub-committee will decide on this issue in its next meeting.

He said the benefits are farmers won’t lose their land and the Mandi system won’t disappear. These aren’t benefits, they already have this today.

AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab Bureau—Giani Harpreet Singh, SGPC-appointed acting jathedar of Akal Takht Sahib, today stated that the Delhi Takht had always deprived oppressed people of justice right from the Mughal period.
While interacting with the media here, he recalled the times when Delhi was the capital of Mughal rulers and then British rulers. “Even during the regimes of Mughal and British, Delhi oppressed the people going by history. The same thing is happening even today when the farmers are being forced to spend nights on the roads amid extreme cold waves. However, this plight is not able to melt the heart of the government. This has made us believe firmly that Delhi can never deliver justice to the people being oppressed,” he said.
Responding to a query on Sikh saint Baba Ram Singh Nanak’s giving his life in protest against the union government over three farm laws and deaths of other farmers, Giani Harpreet Singh said these are unfortunate incidents. “The farmers are losing a life on a daily basis because it is very difficult for them to spend nights on the roads in this unfavorable weather conditions when we are facing the extreme cold.”
“To see the scenes of the farmers sleeping on the roads, everyone with even an iota of sensitivity is being shaken but surprisingly not the Modi government. This government is showing an indifferent attitude towards the plight of the farmers. This attitude is painful,” he said.
He expressed satisfaction that the Sikh community is playing a leading role in the unprecedented agitation going on at the borders of Delhi. He said the efforts being made by the Sikh organizations to help the agitating farmers are laudable.
Remembering 9th Sikh master Guru Teg Bahadar Jee on His Shaheedi Diwas (martyrdom day) that is to be observed at Sri Harmandar Sahib on December 19 as per modified Nanakshahi calendar, he said, “The martyrdom of Guru Sahib shows the world way to fight against the tyranny of people and abuses of human rights of the society.”
This is the fourth occasion when the Jathedar has criticized the Modi government harshly over the issue of farm laws which are considered as fatal for the farmers and have set the tilling class on warpath against the union government of India. However, the government is adamant to retain the laws at every cost. Several rounds of the talk held between the farmer organizations and government have also failed.
While farmers agitating against three farm laws enacted by the central government of India are fighting for their survival, leaders of major political leaders of Punjab are indulging in blame-game instead of doing anything constructive to ensure justice to the farmers.
No single day passes without the statements issued by these leaders against each other on these farm laws. However, they are not united to fight for the interests of the farmers. They criticize the central government that has introduced the “draconian” laws, less but each other more.
Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh is silent over the role being played by the BJP-led central government in case of resolving farm laws for the last many days, but he takes no time to issue statements to counter the allegations leveled against him on this issue.
A few days ago, a Twitter war ensued between him and his Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal over the laws when the former termed a “drama” the latter’s announcement of a fast with the farmers.
Kejriwal tweeted to Amarinder saying he has been a “sewadar” of farmers and stood by them. He even accused Amarinder of “selling the farmers’ protest by having a ‘setting’ with the Centre to get his son exonerated in ED case”. Amarinder hit back at Kejriwal calling him “a coward who had run scared and apologised when cornered in a defamation case by SAD’s Bikram Majithia”.
The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD-Badal) leaders especially its president Sukhbir Badal and his wife Harsimrat Badal are also in a verbal war with both the chief ministers.
Harsimrat fumed over Kejriwal tearing up copies of three laws in Delhi assembly. She condemned Kejriwal for “insulting” the farmer struggle with “cheap theatrics” by tearing copies of the farm laws which he was among the first to notify in the country.
Captain Amarinder Singh today said both the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) were a bunch of hypocrites whose double standards on the farm laws had exposed their lack of commitment to the farmers.
“AAP and SAD MLAs never say what they mean, and vice versa,” said the Chief Minister in an informal interaction with media persons here after the launch of second phase of Punjab Smart Connect Scheme.
When his government passed Bills in the Vidhan Sabha to negate the Centre’s black farm laws, both AAP and SAD MLAs extended support, but then both the parties changed their tune to suit their political interests, said Captain Amarinder. “And now, in a bid to exploit the farmers’ agitation, they have again done a U-turn on the issue and are projecting themselves as the messiahs of the farmers, whose interests both parties had been instrumental in pawning off to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP),” he quipped.
The Chief Minister pointed out that while SAD was party to the introduction of the farm ordinances in the first place, the AAP government in Delhi had been quick to implement one of the draconian laws.

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—Income Tax department that works under BJP-led central government of India, today conducted raids on Punjab’s Arhityas (farming commission agents) who are backing the agitating farmers. The agents are an essential part of Punjab Mandi system which is being scrapped under one of three laws introduced by the government, and the farmers are agitating against these laws.
The action is being termed as a tactic of the government to weaken the unprecedented struggle run by the farmers with the cooperation of the people of all walks of society.
Among the victims of the night-long raids, which were conducted in the presence of 2 bus-loads each of CRPF personnel, were Vijay Kalra (President Punjab Arthiya Association), Pawan Kumar Goyal (President Samana Mandi), Jaswinder Singh Rana (Patiala Dist President), Manjinder Singh Walia (President Nawanshehar), Hardeep Singh Ladda (President Rajpura) and Kartar Singh & Amrik Singh (Arthiyas Rajpura). A total of 14 Arhtiyas across Punjab have received notices from the IT department.
Fumed over it, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh castigated the Centre for its intimidatory tactics against Arhityas supporting the agitating farmers and warned that such draconian measures will further aggravate the angst of the people against the central government.
Terming the clearly motivated Income Tax (I-T) raids against some Punjab Arhtiyas as an obvious pressure tactic to curb their democratic right and freedom, Captain Amarinder said these oppressive actions will backfire against the ruling BJP.
The Chief Minister said it was evident that having failed to persuade, mislead and divide the farmers into ending their prolonged protest against the black farm laws, the central government was now trying to weaken their struggle by targeting the Arhtiyas, who have been actively supporting the agitation since Day 1.
The IT raids were conducted at the premises of several big Arthityas of Punjab within a span of just four days of issuing notices, without waiting for responses to the notices, Captain Amarinder noted, dubbing it a clear debasement of the due process of law. Even the local police were not informed or taken into confidence, as is the normal procedure, and instead, the CRPF was used to provide security during the raids by the I-T teams, he further pointed out.
“What is this if not a clear case of vendetta politics by the Centre, which is hell-bent on demolishing the farmers’ protest by hook or by crook?” asked the Chief Minister.
Captain Amarinder observed that this was not the first instance of misuse of a central agency by the central government to browbeat dissidents into succumbing to its writ and diktats. “These bullying actions of the government do not augur well for the world’s largest democracy,” he added.
Pointing out that even the Supreme Court had upheld the people’s right to protest peacefully, the Chief Minister said the central government’s actions amounted to gross violation of the apex court’s directions and the spirit of the Constitution, which granted every citizen the right to raise his voice.
The Chief Minister said it was unfortunate that instead of hearing the voice of the farmers, who have been battling cold and Covid for more than 3 weeks now (with nearly 2 dozen losing their lives during the protest), the central government was resorting to all kinds of cheap maneuvers to break their will, he lamented.
The Centre should realize that it is not just the future of the farming community but the very Constitutional ethos of the nation that it was endangering with such acts of omission and commission, he stressed.
Captain Amarinder reiterated his appeal to the central government not to stand on ego on the issue but to revoke the farm laws and start afresh with meaningful dialogue with the farmers and all other stakeholders to come out with more progressive reform legislations that are in the interest of all.
SAD condemns central government for carrying out vendetta raids against Arhtiyas
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) President Sukhbir Badal today condemned the BJP led central government for carrying out raids on prominent Arhtiyas in Punjab with the sole objective of intimidating them and forcing them to forsake the support they had extended to the ongoing ‘Kisan Andolan’.
He said this move would only spoil peace and communal harmony in Punjab and requested the centre to resist from launching vendetta politics against those dissenting against the government by using their constitutional right of freedom of speech.
In a statement here, the SAD President said it was shocking that well planned coordinated raids had been conducted on premises of a number of office bearers of the Punjab Arhtiya Association by using the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). “We condemn this oppressive action and assure our Arhtiya brethren that we will join them in protesting against such repressive measures”.
Sukhbir Badal said the central government was also going against the principle of federalism and taking on the powers of the State with this latest action. He said the centre should not misuse central agencies to settle scores against any section of society. “Such measures will only further alienate the people from the central government and could have very dangerous repercussions”.
Badal also cautioned the central government not to do anything which went against the constitutional ethos of the country. He also appealed to Punjabis to unite as one in the interest of Punjabiyat to ensure no one could spoil the peace and communal harmony in the State.
CHANDIGARH, Punjab—Former union minister Harsimrat Badal today disclosed that she raised the issue of Kartarpur Sahib corridor at the meeting of the Committee of External Affairs yesterday. Harsimrat is a member of this committee. After the meeting, she alleged that the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) failed to give her a satisfactory response as to why the corridor was still closed.
Requesting the MEA to facilitate reopening of the Kartarpur corridor at the earliest, she said Sikhs across the world were pained at being unable to visit the last resting place of Sri Guru Nanak Sahib on His 551st Parkash Purb (birth anniversary) last month.
“Keeping the MEA’s response in view External Affairs ministers Dr S Jaishankar should intervene and take up the issue with the Lands Port Authority of India (LPAI) to get the Corridor reopened at the earliest”, she said.
She further said “I am of the firm view that if the entire country can open up and even assembly elections can take place, there is no reason why the Kartarpur Corridor cannot be reopened. The Pakistan government has opened the Corridor for travel nearly two months back. India should follow suit after instituting needed health protocols keeping in view the fact that the Corridor was closed temporarily on March 16 on account of the COVID-19 pandemic”.
The Bathinda MP said it was months since pilgrimage sites across the world as well as the country, which had been partially or fully closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, had been reopened. She said there was an overwhelming sentiment in the Sikh community that the Corridor be reopened so that devotees could pay obeisance at Gurdwara Darbar Sahib at Kartarpur Sahib In Pakistan as well as visit the hallowed area where Guru Sahib made a living practicing agriculture for eighteen years.
“Sikhs were hopeful that the Corridor would be reopened before the 550th Parkash Purb of Guru Sahib on November 30 but their hopes were dashed. The community is both surprised and hurt as to why the Union government is not opening a Corridor which is a symbol of universal peace and brotherhood and denied it a chance to commemorate the 551th anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Sahib at Kartarpur Sahib”, she added.
The corridor provides Guru Nanak Sahib’s followers living in Indian Union a visa-free access to this holy place land of which was tilled by Guru Sahib for His last 18 years.
A long pending demand of the Sikh community living in Indian Union, the corridor was opened on 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Sahib last year by Pakistan in agreement with India. This is a trans-border link between the gurdwara and another historic Sikh town Dera Baba Nanak, which is situated along the border in the state of Punjab.
The Home Ministry of India had suspended the pilgrimage through the corridor from March 16 this year. On the other hand, all the worship places including Kartarpur Sahib had been closed to the public in Pakistan as well due to the outbreak.
After more than three months, the Pakistan government offered to reopen the corridor on June 29, 2020, the occasion of the death anniversary of Sikh ruler Maharaja Ranjit Singh. On October 1, Pakistan issued formal notification to reopen the corridor from its side.
However, Indian government is adamant to keep the pilgrimage suspended citing Covid-19 protocol, despite it allowed to reopen the worship places in the country several weeks ago.

NEW DELHI—Amid the ongoing farmers’ protests at the borders of Delhi, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a surprise visit to Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib here today morning.
The interesting thing that occurred during his visit was that katha-vichar (discussion) of daily hukamnama seemed to be snubbing Modi for his alleged misdeeds being done especially in the case of three farm laws introduced by him. These laws are being considered “destructive” for the farming community, but he is adamant to not roll them back despite thousands of farmers are sitting on roads to protest these laws.
The Hukumnama refers to a hymn from a randomly selected left-hand side of the Guru Granth Sahib on a daily basis in the morning.
A video that captured Modi conversating with granthi of the gurdwara, has gone viral over social media. In this video, the Sikh preacher is heard saying, “You call yourself as one who exercises religious ethos and serves the people. But your thinking has not changed with this. You have even read the religious scriptures which teach the ideology of human welfare. If you don’t adopt it and implement this in your life, none will help you during doomsday”.
As soon as the PM moved out, the preachers uttered, “Where will you run away from the trap of death which is looming over you?”
This video is being shared widely over social media platforms comments condemning Modi for ignoring the farmers during his New Delhi trip.
Pertinently, Modi first kept this visit secret from the media, but later on, he promoted it on his Twitter handle on large scale. He also paid respect to ninth Guru Sri Guru Teg Bahadar whose headless body was cremated at this place in 1675, in Punjabi.
Mughal rulers beheaded Guru Sahib for fighting for the religious freedom of the people.
Modi also presented ‘rumala’ for Guru Granth Sahib, after which he was felicitated with ‘siropa’ (robe of honour) and a garland at the Gurdwara by the granthi. His felicitation is being widely criticized in the Sikh masses.
Modi’s visit is drawing various remarks and being termed a tactic to pacify the Sikh farmers who are leading the unprecedented agitation at Singhu and Tikri borders of the national capital of India against his government. “Terrorists, Khalistanis, Leftists, Anti-Indians, Chinese and Pakistan agents…….The protesters have name-called with all these labels but not as farmers. So, now PM heads to Gurdwara Rakabganj to appease all of the above?”, says Priyanka Chaturvedi, a columnist and Shiv Sena MP.

FATEHGARH SAHIB, Punjab—The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) once again defied Akal Takht Sahib’s edict excommunicating former Akali minister Sucha Langah for his immoral act by facilitating Akhand Path (uninterrupted recitation of Guru Granth Sahib) organized by him at sacred Shaheedi Asthan (place where martyrdom was attained) of Chhote Sahibzade (younger sons of 10th Sikh Guru Sri Guru Gobind Singh Jee) at Fatehgarh Sahib.
The Akhand Path was held in the name of Langah at Bhora Sahib where the Chhote Sahibzade (Baba Fateh Singh and Baba Zorawar Singh) were executed by Mughal rulers for not bowing down before them. Besides, Langah was allowed to enter this sacred place, whereas no common devotee is allowed to do so keeping in view of sacredness and sanctity of this place. The granthi appointed by the SGPC also gave him ‘siropa’ (robe of honour).
This happened despite the fact that Langah, who has also been member of the apex gurdwara body, was excommunicated in October 2017 by Akal Takht Sahib after he was found him guilty of misconduct and violation of the Sikh tenets on the basis of his vulgar video that went viral. After being acquitted by the court on technical grounds, he pleaded for pardon before the Takht thrice but was not entertained in view of his offence.
As the news reached him, Giani Harpreet Singh who is SGPC-appointed acting jathedar of Takht Sahib, issued an order to the SGPC to take action against its staffers guilty of this offence. In the evening, the SGPC president Jagir ‘Kaur’ suspended the gurdwara manager Karam Singh and a granthi concerned. Apart from this, she also ordered a probe to identify all the persons involved in the matter.
The Takht Sahib’s edict that excommunicated him, directs the Sikh community to shun all kinds of ties with Langah.
Prior to this, the SGPC staffers organized an Amrit Sanchar samagam in a historic Gurdwara Baba Banda SIngh Bahadar in Gurdaspur district to make an attempt to pardon Langah bypassing the highest Sikh temporal seat. An elected member of the SGPC was also behind Langah’s facilitation. However, the Panj Singh Sahiban (highest Sikh presidium) thwarted the attempt by taking strong against the persons who facilitated Langah.
Actually, Langah is eager to rejoin politics but the Akal Takht Sahib’s edict is the biggest hurdle in his way.
Former Punjab Vidhan Sabha deputy speaker and Shiromani Akali Dal (Democratic) senior leader Bir Davinder Singh termed the fresh facilitation of Langah “desecration” of the holy place where Chhote Sahibzade attained martyrdom. He sought stringent action against those responsible for it.
This incident has occurred few days before the martyrdom day of the Chhote Sahibzade.
