CHANDIGARH, Punjab—The Panthik Front comprising of Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar), United Akali Dal, Sutantar Akali Dal and other pro-freedom political Sikh organizations released its first list of 40 candidates on December 30 in Chandigarh.
Responding to media queries, Simranjit Singh Mann said that the manifesto and names of candidates for the remaining constituencies will be released soon. He also clarified that all the candidates of Panthik Front will contest the election under the banner of Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) i.e. Cart.
Interestingly, the Panthik Front has nominated Taksali stalwart Satnam Singh Manawa from Khemkaran constituency where the ruling SAD’s Virsa Singh Valtoha is the sitting MLA.
Virsa Singh Valtoha and Sujan Singh Manawa (paternal uncle of Satnam Singh Manawa) used to be the close aide of great Sikh of the 20th century, Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. Bhai Sujan Singh attained martyrdom during Operation Bluestar while Virsa Singh Valtoha survived and became a part of Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) in late 1990’s after being released from Jodhpur Jail.
The Panthik Front has nominated United Akali Dal’s General Secretary Gurdeep Singh Bathinda from Rampura Phool which is a reserved constituency for so-called scheduled castes. Controversial leader of SAD (Badal) Sikandar Singh Maluka is the current MLA from Rampura Phool.
