Chief Minister orders withdrawal of attempt to murder charges in dung dumping case, transfers SHO

HOSHIARPUR, Punjab—Following the blacklash from the farmers, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Wednesday ordered withdrawal of Section 307 against Farm Laws protestors who dumped cow dung outside an ex-BJP minister’s house.

Captain Amarinder, who also holds the Home portfolio, has also ordered transfer of the SHO who had registered the `attempt to murder’ case, which is now being probed by a Special Investigative Team (SIT).

The Chief Minister said the SHO had gone overboard in registering a case under Section 307 of the IPC. “There was no attempt to murder,” he said, referring to the Hoshiarpur incident, in which a group of protestors had unloaded a trolley full of cow dung in front of former Punjab minister Tikshan Sud’s residence.

The dung was heaped as Sood mocked the farmers who are agitating on the borders of Delhi against three farmer laws promulgated by BJP-led union government. He stated that those who are going to Delhi to join the stir, are actually going for a picnic. He was facing a backlash from the people of Punjab for making this remark.

On the basis of the statement of a local BJP worker, the FIR states that the protesters attempted to kill the Minister with deadly weapons. Following which, the farmers opposed this FIR especially attempt to murder charges and even staged protest seeking cancellation of the FIR. Though the FIR was not cancelled, the attempt to murder charges were under pressure of the people.

The farmers protesting against the FIR have hailed the withdrawal of the section 307, but reiterated that cancellation of the FIR would be the complete justice.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister has termed as correct and justified the arrest of Punjabi singer Shree Brar for promoting gun culture in a music video. Promoting gangsterism and gun culture in this manner was absolutely wrong, he said, adding that the case had been registered correctly in the matter which related to an old song of the singer.

Captain Amarinder made it clear that the arrest had no connect with the singer’s video in support of the protesting farmers, which in fact was appreciable. However, his good work now could not condone the negative impact of his old song encouraging youth to pick up guns.

Noting that Punjab was a border state facing ongoing threats from across the border, the Chief Minister said “we will not allow the state’s peace to be disturbed in any manner”, which such acts had the potential to do.

Farmers show trailer of grand tractor parade scheduled on Republic Day of India

NEW DELHI—Periphery of India’s national capital New Delhi was flooded with tractors as the farmers today took out a tremendous march on their tractors in a rehearsal of their “tractor parade” scheduled on January 26 (Republic Day of India) in protest against three contentious farm laws introduced by BJP-led Central Government of India.

By taking out this march, the farmers showed the country a trailer of what they are doing on January 26, over which the government is worried as the agitating farmers are adamant to get these laws rolled back.

Today’s tractor rally started from three protest sites—Singhu, Tikria and Ghazipur—situated on the borders of the national capital. Once again, farmers of Punjab played a leading role in this rally. Farmers of every age participated in the rally with enthusiasm and slogans of “Kisan-Mazdoor Ekta Zindabad”, “Modi Sarkar – Murdabad” and “Bole So Nihal – Sat Sri Akal” echoed in the sky over ring road around Delhi.

Notably, the national flag of India, called ‘Tiranga’, was rarely seen in the rally and mostly flags of Kisan unions and Khalsa flags were being hoisted by the farmers on tractors. This happened despite the union leaders’ appeal to the farmers to hoist “Tiranga” during the January 26 parade, thereby courting controversy among the Sikh circles.

This rally was 25 km long and more than 3000 tractors participated in it, as per the official estimates reported by media portals. As far as the count of farmers is concerned, they seemed to be countless, said eyewitnesses. So, this rally is being considered the largest and longest ever tractor rally in world history.

Notably, women of Haryana were also seen driving the tractors in their traditional attire.

The beauty of this march was that the farmers maintained discipline and peace. No untoward incident was reported from this unprecedented march.

The farmers announced last week that if their demands were not met, they will march in their tractors at Rajpath on Republic Day, where India’s annual military parade and cultural programme is held on January 26.

Expressing his sentiments about this march, Cricketer turned politician Navjot Singh Sidhu said in a tweet, “How unfortunate, the tractor that ploughed the fields, is blocking National Highways, pulling barricades…Our symbol of prosperity is now an engine of resentment against an arbitrary Govt.., which crushes basic Fundamental Rights that define Democracy #TractorMarchDelhi”.

Pictures and videos of this historic march are going viral.

The hashtag #TractorMarchDelhi trended at #1 under India for a while earlier today. A number of other noted personalities used the hashtag in support of the farmers. Namely, Prashant Bhusan and Randeep Singh Surjewala.

In one of his tweets, Prashant Bhusan said, “As farmers take out #TractorMarchDelhi we stand in solidarity as they brave the cold&rain to get the anti-farmer laws repealed. These laws were passed w/o consulting farmers or States,&w/o discussion&vote in Parliament. It is only Modi/Shah’s arrogance which prevents their repeal”.

AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—Sardar Khajan Singh, father of Sikh freedom fighter Shaheed Bhai Sukhdev Singh Sukha who along with Bhai Harjinder Singh Jinda avenged army attack on Sri Akal Takht Sahib, passed away on Thursday.

He was not well because of his age factor and breathed his last today morning, said the family sources. He was very proud of what was done by his son to avenge the demolition of the highest Sikh temporal seat.

The Sikh leaders and organizations have mourned his demise while recognizing his contribution to Panth and hailing him father of a great Sikh warrior who played a leading role in the present Sikh struggle for freedom.

Meanwhile, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) Jagir ‘Kaur’ paid tribute to Sardar Mehanga Singh and did ardas before Guru seeking his soul rest in peace. The SGPC secretary Sukhdev Singh Bhura Kohna said last rites of Bhai Sukha’s father would be performed tomorrow at his village in Rajasthan.

On August 10 in 1986, Bhai Jinda and Bhai Sukha had shot dead the Indian army general A.S. Vaidya for his role in the demolition of Akal Takht Sahib in 1984. On October 9 in 1992, the duo Sikh warriors were hanged till death in the Yerwada Central Prison of Pune. They had proudly admitted their act of punishing A.S. Vaidya before the Court.

The temporary hospital is in addition to a number of make shift dispensaries that have been set up at the Delhi borders.

Meanwhile, the farmers have started making robust arrangements to save themselves from the torrential downpour of rains. Several teams are working day and night to erect heightened tents with the best kind of roof sheets.

In every tent, two or three impermissible roof sheets are being used to stop leakage of water downwards but still the muddy floors are proving a big challenge for the farmers.

Several social organizations are already active to medicate farmers feeling of problems due to the chilling cold and rainy weather.

For the last many days, the North Indian region has been witnessing continuous rain amid frosty weather.

Addressing the protesting farmers from the main stage on January 6, farmer leader Balbir Singh Rajewal made it clear that the farmers’ agitation won’t end till the Indian government doesn’t repeal trio farm laws. He also appealed the farmers to remain vigilant about the cheap tactics of Indian government to torpedo their struggle.

He also made a special appeal to the farmers to keep this agitation fully peaceful as now it is on its peak. “Our patience and peaceful determination will definitely take us to victory,” he added.

Earlier today, scores of activists belonging to the Kisaan Majdoor Sangharsh Committee showed black flags to Sukhbir Badal when his caravan arrived in Sultanpur Lodhi.

The protesters accused Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) of misleading the Punjab masses by maintaining double standards on farm laws. “A few months back, the Badals were appreciating and supporting these laws while declaring these laws beneficial for the farmers, but they took a U-turn when the farmers stood up against these laws,” they said.

It may be recalled here that the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) had snapped ties with the ruling BJP after finding no way out to get rid of farmers’ flak. Recently, Sukhbir Badal had announced that the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) would never ally with the BJP even if these laws are repealed.

Akali Dal has been facing increasing scrutiny by the farmers for multiple reasons. Firstly, Akali Leaders supported farm laws. When protests started happening, Harsimrat Babal resigned as a Union Minister, and later the Akalis snapped their ties with the BJP to save their face in Punjab. And very recently, Sukhbir Badal said that the 60+ kisans who have passed away during the #FarmersProtest were members of the Akali Dal. It should be noted that the Kisan Union leaders have not allowed Akali leaders to speak from their stages.

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—The State Home Department of Punjab has suspended two police officers, namely ADCP Paramjit Singh Pannu and SP Baljit Singh Sidhu, for their involvement Kotkapura firing incident. Notably, the duo police officers were under the Arms Act in the FIR of the Kotkapura firing incident.

It is learned that the duo cops have been suspended on the recommendation of Punjab DGP Dinkar Gupta.

The development has come just two days after the Punjab & Haryana High Court’s direction to CBI for handing over all case diaries and papers related to the sacrilege episode of 2015.

On October 14 in 2015, the Punjab police cops had opened unprovoked firing on Sikh protesters in Kotkapura at the behest of the then DGP Sumedh Saini. Several Sikh activists were left severely injured in this firing incident.

The CCTV footage of this firing incident had come to the fore. The then IG Paramraj Umranangal was observed continuously receiving directions from Sumedh Saini over the phone before opening an unprovoked firing baton charging the peacefully protesting Sikhs.

Paramjit Singh Pannu was serving as an Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, Ludhiana, while Baljit Singh was the then DSP of Kotkapura.

Later, an FIR under sections 307, 326, 324, 323, 341, 218, 120-B, and 34 of the IPC and section 27 of the Arms Act was registered concerning this incident.

Akal Takht Sahib refuses to mediate between Centre, farmers to break impasse over farm laws

AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—Amid media reports that the Central government of India is planning to approach him to seek his mediation to break the prolonged impasses over three contentious farm laws enacted by the government, Giani Harpreet Singh, SGPC-appointed acting Jathedar of Akal Takht Sahib, today refused to act as mediator citing that this was not a religious issue and his mediation made no sense at all.

Reacting to media reports, he said, “This is the issue concerning farmers of India and about the law. The farmers are opposing three laws enacted by the Indian Government. This is not an issue that pertains to Sikh Rehat Maryada or religious ethos. Nor is it a matter of any ideological difference. So, only farmer leaders and the Central Government should resolve this issue through mutual talks and meetings. And the government should resolve it as early as possible because the farmers are sitting on the roads for a long time”.

“Yes, Sri Akal Takht Sahib has been making appeals to the community to cooperate with farmers and their organizations in their struggle against these laws. We pray to Waheguru to bless the government with positive thinking so that it gets ready to address the concerns of the farmers,” he said.

Giani Harpreet Singh added, “I appeal to the agitating farmers to maintain peace, patience, and harmony. The entire world is watching the farmers agitating at Delhi borders. So, we should do such things that leave a positive impact on the struggle, which is happening. We should avoid indulging in negative things.”

An exclusive story published on the front page of English Daily ‘The Tribune’ quoted BJP national spokesperson Kamaljit Soi as saying, “As negotiations aren’t moving beyond ‘yes’ and ‘no,’ we need a third party whom both sides look up to. There has been a trust deficit, and spiritual leaders can help bridge the gap. We will approach Giani Harpreet Singh — head of the highest temporal seat of Sikhs.”

This plan has come to the public domain after the Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar met Baba Lakha Singh of Nanaksar Gurdwara Friday.

Soi claimed it was tough to come to conclusion on any point with around 40 union leaders, attending talks from the farmers’ side. “It’s terribly cold, and even Baba Lakha Singh was of the view that all farmers, particularly women and children, should return home,” he added.

Akali Dal demands Bhai Rajoana be released as a humanitarian gesture

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Badal today urged the union government to set Bhai Balwant Singh Rajowana free to put a decisive end to his unending incarceration. “This humanitarian gesture would be in conformation with civilized values and justice as Bhai Rajoana had already served more than the effective equivalent of a life sentence,” he said.

Badal asked the Congress leaders to rise above political opportunism and back the release of Bhai Rajoana.

“It is so unfortunate that Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has always hunted with the hounds and run with the hare when it comes to emotional Sikh issues. He tries to please his masters in Delhi by opposing the release of Bhai Rajoana while opportunistically maintaining that personally, he is opposed to capital punishment. He is so afraid to take a categorical stand for the release of someone who has already spent the best part of his life in jail for something he did out of grievous religious and emotional hurt”, he elaborated.

Badal called upon both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ram Nath Kovind to personally expedite this gesture as a fulfillment of a national commitment made to Punjabis in general and the Sikh quam the Government of India. “The Government of India is already on record having committed to commuting Bhi Rajoana’s death sentence into life imprisonment. This commitment was made as a special gesture to the Sikh quam on the eve of the 550th  Parkash Gurpurb of Guru Nanak Dev Ji”, he said.

“Because of this commitment, there is no rationale behind keeping Bhai Rajoana behind bars for even a single day more as he has already suffered incarceration in prison for over 26 years – much longer than the effective duration of a life term. His death sentence was changed to life imprisonment, and Bhai Rajoana has served nearly twice as much time as a normal lifer’s term of ten to fourteen years,” said Badal.

The SAD president said that the Shiromani Akali Dal, “which is democratically entrusted by the Sikh masses to run the religious affairs of the Khalsa Panth through the SGPC, had sent a resolution to the Government of India demanding first the commuting of Bhai Rajoana’s death sentence to a life term and later for his release as he had already spent two-thirds of the best years of his life already in prison.”

“The SAD had successfully secured the acceptance of the community’s demand for the review of Black Lists of the Sikhs maintained by Indian missions abroad as well as getting a stay on the execution of orders to hang Bhai Rajoana,” he added.

EXCLUSIVE: Adamant to forge Khalistan’s link with leftist’ murder, Delhi cops not letting Punjab counterparts quiz accused

File Photo: Balwinder Sandhu

NEW DELHI—Delhi Police Special Cell is adamant about fabricating Khalistani activists behind the murder of Shaurya Chakra recipient and controversial leftist leader Comrade Balwinder Sandhu. This has become evident from the unwillingness to hand over the key accused to Punjab Police, which is ruling out any Khalistan’s link with this murder from day one, for questioning.

On plea of the Special Cell, a Delhi court has denied Tarn Taran unit of Punjab Police transit remand of two the persons who were arrested by the Delhi cops after an encounter in connection with the narco-terrorism activities on December 7 last year, twice.

Named as Gurjeet Singh, alias Bha and Sukhdeep Singh, alias Bhura of Gurdaspur district, both are required by Tarn Taran cops for questioning for further investigation of the case as it was alleged by the Cell that these are the two shooters who gunned down the left-wing leader on October 16 last year at his village Bhikhiwind in TarnTaran district. It was also alleged by the Cell that “the duo is part of the ISI-backed gang which is trying to revive pro-Khalistan militancy in Punjab.”

Both the accused are in the custody of the Delhi Police Special Cell on remand.

When applied by Tarn Taran cops for the transit remand first time on December 30, the court denied it, citing the logic given by the Delhi cops. The logic was the pandemic situation.

The court agreed to grant the transit remand on January 6, but the Delhi cops again created a hurdle and asked the court to reverse the remand order. They expressed their “inability” to hand over the accused to their counterparts in Punjab. This time, the reason they cited was “farmers protest”. And the court got convinced again.

One of the leading English Daily Hindustan Time quoted a senior police official on condition of anonymity in its Punjab edition on January 9, 2021, as saying, “The Delhi Police filed a plea in the court saying they could not provide adequate force to send the two accused to Punjab due to the ongoing protests. The Punjab cops assured the court that they would provide security during the transit remand, but the Delhi Police refused this.”

It also quoted Tarn Taran SSP Dhruman H Nimble as saying, “We will file another plea as the custodial interrogation of the two is crucial in the case.”

The sources from Punjab Police question that if Delhi cops are not ready to hand over the custody to alleged shooters, how would they give custody of Sukhmeet Pal Singh alias Sukh Bhikhariwal so easily, who was arrested from New Delhi airport on December 31 upon his deportation from Dubai and is alleged mastermind in the murder case. It is being suspected that something is wrong with the theory being presented by the Delhi cops in the matter; that is why they are reluctant to give their custody to the Punjab cops.

The lawyers say that Punjab Police strongly deserves to be taking these accused on remand as the murder case is its concern, not of Delhi Police as the criminal activity has taken place in Punjab and the FIR is registered in the Police station concerned.

Tarn Taran cops are of the same view that they have not found any terror or Khalistani angle in the case. Another prestigious English Daily, The Indian Express, also quoted Nimbale in its story published on January 9 as saying, “Our investigation into Sandhu murder case is still going on. We had unveiled the nexus, but the main conspirator and executors were not arrested. So far, we hadn’t found any terror angle. But new facts have come on record after taking custody of Sukh Bhikharipur”.

As Delhi cops have also linked British Sikh Jagtar Singh alias Jaggi Johal to this narco terror case and murder case now, the SSP said they would also bring Johal on remand. However, he refused to say anything on the claims of Delhi cops about this alleged link. While seeking remand of Johal, Delhi Police claimed to refer to Bhikhariwal that “Johal along with his aide instructed him to kill Sandhu considering him as a threat to the Khalistan movement.”

Delhi Police may have linked Johal to this case just to strengthen their claim that “Khalistani militants are behind this murder,” assesses law experts.

Sandhu, who was awarded Shaurya Chakra by the President of India for playing a role against the armed Sikh movement in Punjab in the 1990s, was shot dead by two unknown persons today morning at his residence at village Bhikhiwind. He was also close to the then infamous Punjab DGP KPS Gill, who was also called “Butcher of Sikhs,” going by his photograph with him.

As there was no threat to his life in changed circumstances, his security cover was also withdrawn by the Punjab Police. However, his family and the people who are still vocal against the Sikh militancy that was result of army attack on holiest Sikh shrine Harmandar Sahib and Sikh carnage, have forcibly been linking this murder to the supporters of Khalistan since day one.  His sons were also booked under criminal cases.

They said Reliance will entice us first then after a few years we are completely beholden to them and their terms.

Then why no Sikh ideologue in the Farmer leadership. Some see his points as valid, as they want success in morcha but not at the cost of the Sikh nation, others see him rocking the ship at a time when it’s not required.
14. Navdeep Singh who turned off the water cannon at the beginning of the move to Delhi, then was charged by the same police with attempted murder. He addressed farmers’ morcha.
