Convicted of murder -Jagir Kaur – ex-President of the SGPC

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—The Punjab & Haryana High Court’s division bench comprised of Justice AK Mittal and Ramindra Jain reportedly adjourned a hearing due to a petition moved by Jagir Kaur, in seeking a stay on her conviction. Jagir Kaur had been the president of the Sikh body SGPC, and currently represents the legislative assembly area of Bholath.

According to sources, the High Court adjourned a hearing for Jagir Kaur’s, to January 10, in which she had sought a stay on a conviction by citing her ineligibility for the Punjab assembly polls, due in 2017. According to the Representation of People’s Act-1955, anyone who is convicted for committing an offence or sentenced for more than two years imprisonment doesn’t qualify the Election Commission’s norms to contest an election.

A court found Jagir Kaur guilty in 2012 in the murder of her daughter, Harpreet Kaur, in April 2000, charged with forcible abortion of the victim’s child, wrongful confinement, abduction and criminal conspiracy. Harpreet Kaur’s in-laws took Jagir Kaur the the High Court, who in turn directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe the case. The CBI convicted Jagir Kaur of having a hand in the murder of her daughter.
