
AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—While the whole world was beginning preparations to mark 68th World Human Rights Day on December 10, an activist of the Youth Akali Dal Amritsar named Bhai Gursharan Singh Sohal was reportedly abducted by Punjab police in Amritsar. After the slow passage of 36 hours, his family members and friends are still unable to obtain any information on him.
Gursharan Singh was taken from Katra Khazana (on New Jail road) in Amritsar between 8 and 9 am in the morning. He was travelling in his ‘Indica’ car which was being driven by his brother.
Gursharan Singh’s brother reported that police in two vehicles stopped their car and asked them to get out. He added that both of them get out of car, assuming this was routine traffic check.
“They manhandled my brother (Gursharan Singh) and threw him into their vehicle after pulling me away”, he added.
On being contacted by Sikh24, a senior member of the Youth Akali Dal Amritsar informed us that they were unable get any information about Gursharan Singh’s abduction. He said that Sohal’s relatives have approached high rank officials of the Punjab police but they all claim to have no knowledge on the matter. He added that efforts were being made to lodge a petition in Punjab & Haryana High Court seeking an investigation.
Two other Sikh youths namely Amandeep Singh and Simarjot Singh were also arrested by the Punjab police but their family members managed to locate where they were being held and pressurize a release. Sources have shared that the Punjab police was targeting the Sikh youths who took part in Sarbat Khalsa 2016 on December 8 at Talwandi Sabo after breaching the police’s perimeter.
