CHANDIGARH, Punjab (April 14, 2015)—The Punjab and Haryana High Court has refused to grant stay on the upcoming movie “Nanak Shah Fakir”. A hearing petition was filed on last Thursday by Ludhiana based Satpal Singh seeking ban on the “controversial movie”. In the petition, Satpal Singh through his legal counsel Ranjan Lakhanpal had termed the film as “against the Sikh tenets” and stated that it hurts the sentiments of the Sikhs.
The vacation bench of the high today asked the Central Board of Film Certification, film producer Harinder Singh Sikkar, Punjab and Centre Government to file their replies on April 23. In the meantime, no stay was granted on the movie’s release.
It is worth mentioning that Sikhs have expressed their concern over the screening of the film as it is blasphemy against Sikh religion. As per Sikh tenets, personification of Sikh Gurus is not allowed and nor can animation character of Guru Sahib be created. The film is slated to be released on April 17.
